Mercedes Benz Innovates – The Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile

Automobile Drag Coefficient is the technical term for measuring the aerodynamic ability of a car. In easier words, the readings of the drag coefficient tell us how a car can cut through air while dragging. Mercedes Benz has moved us into a new era where the car will transform into an aerodynamic sleek machine when it reaches the speed of 80 km/h.

The Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile also has a cutting edge futuristic design, I especially liked the location of the headlamps, at last, we found a different location for the headlamps, thanks to the Mercedes designers.

The “Concept IAA” has a drag coefficient of .19 when it is transformed dynamically. The digital transformation includes widening of the front-flaps, front-bumper lamella moving backward, active rims, and a tail-end extension, all of these factors improve the drag coefficient from 0.25 to 0.19.

To understand what a 0.19 drag coefficient means you can compare it with McLaren P1 which has a 0.34 drag coefficient in spite of sleek design and aerodynamic ninjutsu.

“Concept IAA” world premiered at the 2015 IAA Frankfurt. A superb presentation was compiled with dance and animation at the event (click for Frankfurt presentation video) to showcase the concept car.

The Digital Future

The car is a digital transformer and a communicator. With several detectors, cameras, and sensors the vehicle is able to adhere to maximum safety measures. It can even communicate with other cars on the road to minimize the risk of accidents.

Surely this is another milestone achieved in the future of automobiles, I am sure the day is not far when we have flying vehicles without accidents.
