University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA Health) received a batch of 50,000 N95 surgical masks donated by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his team just days after Elon Musk said that the Tesla factory can be repurposed to make venitlators and the automaker will be helping with masks for healthcare professionals in the country.
Another batch of 50k N95 masks was also delivered to University of Washington (UW Medicine) by Tesla as reported by Seattle Times and Professor Dr. Waldorf announced it on Twitter quoting a naysayer that the announcements by Elon Musk were not more than a PR attempt.
In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, there has been an ever-increasing demand for the following items:
- Unused N95 respirators and surgical masks
- Disposable gloves
- Hand Sanitizer containers
- Disinfectants and disinfecting wipes
- Unused protective goggles
Elon Musk has promised that Tesla will deploy as many masks as possible to the hospitals and the health care professionals in probably one of the toughest times the 21st century has faced yet. My friend and co-author at CleanTechnica Johnna Crider also pointed Elon Musk to the need of masks and PAPR helmets in New Orleans, Louisiana to which the Tesla & SpaceX CEO replied:
We’ll try to get & deliver as many as possible. N95 masks are a pain to wear btw. Less onerous masks are better most of the time.
For the ventilators, Elon Musk said that he and his team are working on delivering around 1200 ventilators this week, but the real challenge according to him is getting them installed and operating. Till the last updates there have been 15,000 confirmed fatalities due to the COVID-19 pandemic and more than 350,000 confirmed cases of the highly contagious disease.
